Reflections on Maternal and Child Health from Conception to Five Years
Maternal and child health in Kenya is shaped by a continuum of care spanning from conception through the first five years of life. Critical touchpoints include antenatal care, skilled delivery, postnatal follow-up, immunization, nutrition, and early childhood development support.
Despite progress, gaps remain. Many women face barriers to timely antenatal visits, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal care, especially in rural and underserved areas. Infant and child health outcomes are similarly affected by limited access to vaccination, malnutrition, and preventable illnesses.
Reflecting on this continuum highlights that maternal and child health cannot be addressed in isolation. Interventions must be integrated, ensuring that mothers and children receive consistent support at every stage — from pregnancy, through delivery, to the child’s fifth birthday. Policies that strengthen health systems, community engagement, and early childhood services are essential to bridging these gaps and sustaining improvements in health outcomes.
